Everyone is Encouraged to Join as the Additional Haim Member.

"When are you chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There is only a single issue: The author likewise longs to be Haim's fourth member. And we're not alone. Several high-profile supporters have openly petitioned for the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy contenders.

Similar to the best groups, they're a inseparable gang. Their visuals repeatedly feature them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such unfettered joy you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the ultimate honor. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire others to start a band."

"And thus anyone gets an invitation to be the fourth part of the family."

Grammy Nod

The trio are speaking from a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the nomination resonates with the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant achievement," continues Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project emerged from a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that unique transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That recent toughness demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The trio's candor fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner left Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an global audience.

However the sister act will consistently be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
