A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the event.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to former President Trump announced on the weekend that Maduro had been apprehended.
A particular user, which became a member in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market statistics shows that participants put the odds of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.
However the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a sharp shift in positions immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.
Several of other traders also earned large payouts from predicting the capture.
Elected officials are starting to take note.
A new rule presented on Monday seeks to ban government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.
Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the United States, with participants able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to political events.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting industry.
A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
