2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Brinkman steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the need for a more defined game identity.
Ismailer noted that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to better meet community desires.
The news echoes a similar move taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the full content from Ismailer's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re eager for that relationship to endure.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the requirement for a sharper brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You took the feedback to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s poised to fulfill its promise to our fans.
The trust in this project increases every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Director of 31st Union. After several months of discussions, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.
His management and experience in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in receiving Ben soon. We are all excited to persist seeing the development of the game in the weeks to come.
The President
The appointee currently serves in the position of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Then, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch states. "Face the rivals with unique powers, challenges, and challenges that change every match. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, risk it all, and pray your team can secure victory? The option is up to you."
The game does not have an official release date or platforms, but fans can anticipate additional details as creation advances.
